it's worth it with quality links or a quality submission service to do it for you. you need a spread of PR to get the search engines to use it and NO FFA link sites!

I personally do not perform much directory submission for my sites.
I rather get my guys more active in forums, blogs and social bookmarking to get quality and relevant links.
There is always related blogs and forums for your site. Find it and get it.

To follow up on what everyone said, if its a free service, and most of them are, it does not hurt your cause. You will probably get a nicer PR because of them anyway. Any free backlinks you can get is a very good thing

just want to ask how to use social bookmarking? and in blog is it the comment where i can get 1 way link. but almost all of the blog i have seen is a NoFollow blog. should i post only in blogs related to my site or i can post to other that are not related to me? how about if i want a link exchange is it allowed to make reciprocal links to site that are not related to you or it is not allowed. please give advice. thanks.

I did a test on a clean domain and a 750 directory submission package resulted in 10 or less visitors per day the months thereafter. The overall value in regards to traffic is almost not existent. It helps to get the site indexed though, but there are cheaper ways to do that. So, I'd save the money ....

1/ Free directories should be one element in a strategy
2/ Make sure they have PR.
3/ Pay for a quality service - not the cheapest.
4/ Some people will actually guarantee inclusion (i.e. they own or know the directory). Worth paying extra for in my mind.

    Don't get confused,
I have seen many website got PR 1, 2 or 3 by only directory and SE submissions.
Really believe me, through only directory submissions and some what article submission my client website got PR 2.
Even one of website got PR 3 in just 6 months.
But i have done healthy submissions, so many SE's and 3000 and more than directories.
If you wish the same for your website send me PM.

From my experience, you should avoid free directory submission. They will only hurt your you.

They are the Holy Grail of Traffic and SEO. The best kept secret of the top online marketers.

Just kidding. Stay away from them, unless you want to waste your time with biz-opp junkies and get nothing in return.

I've submitted to a few decades of them a week back but have seen almost no results. No backlinks in Google or the other SE's.
