Submit to directories or not?

    I wonder if I should submit my site to directories or not now that Google has started penalizing sites with paid backlinks? However, I would submit to free directories only, so that would be fine, wouldn't it?

    All (imho) directories are fine for submitting to but look for directories with good review contents :)

    Steer clear of the sites with mfa type sites in their categories :cool:

    Submit only to those quality directories,. avoid penalized directories,.
    Directory submission might be an old technique yet still effective in providing us a quality backlinks

    i agree, get listed in the top ranking directories related to your content, don't worry about the crappy ones. I usually just put my link in 10 directories and get the rest of my links in forums and comments on blogs.

    Check to see if the directory category pages are being cached in Google, and how often. If their pages are not getting cached or have not been cached for 6 months then the odds are pretty low of that link carrying much weight.

    Oh and also...try and get into DMOZ. This is one directory that does carry some weight.

    I try to submit to any free directories that I can find, I don't see any harm, one more backlink is more one in Google's counting....
