Submissions to Search Engines

Hello all. New to the Forum but thought you could help me out. I've seen all these ads for submitting my site over and over again to 800,000+ search engines.

Does this actually do anything to help your overall ranking on any sites? I know most people just use the big 3 (Google, Yahoo, MSN). Does this actually help your ranking on any of those three?

...and if it doesn't help ranking then does it have any benefit at all?

I think you may have meant

Yes, Listing your website in more directories will effect the ranking of your site.

There are only a few search engines that have 99% of the market and you don't have to submit to them. Their spiders follow links to your site and index your pages.

Submission forms for search engines are completely unnecesary and paying to be submitted is a ripoff

I rarely hear about search engine submission anymore but I do remember being told 4 years ago that it can actually hurt submitting to Google. You need incoming links from sites listed in them and they will pick you up themselves like yfs1 said.

I think that any search engine worth their salt nowadays have crawlers that will find your site though incoming links. My advice would be to work on those.

Over submitting to a search engine wouldn't hurt a site as I'd just spend all day submitting my competitors.

From a single IP address. Submitting multiple times can hurt you at DMOZ but no-one submits their competition over and over. Why? Because when someone complained, all they would have to do is track down the IP that made the submissions and go from there.

I wouldn't suggest continuosly submitting because at best you are wasting your time, at worst you could be labeled a spammer.

Yes the IP address that the submissions came from could be punished - though unlikely, but not the site itself.

Paying for submissions is kinda silly.

Search Engines pick up your site without submissions.

I wouldnt pay anyone to computer generate your site to tons of engines. Its the other services that are offered that you have to get.

Submitting to SEs is a waste of time. Instead you should spend the time submitting to directories. Even spend some money to get some quality links from different directories.
