I have seen many ads about submitting sites into thousands of search engines, looks very attractive. Has anyone here tried that?

Its usually a bunch of free for all link pages that your site would get bumped off of in a few days from being listed.

Yeah the big 3 will send 99% of your traffic, in some cases getting listed in the directories and FFA pages that most of those submit too could end up getting you looked at as being affiliated with bad neighborhoods and hurt rankings.

Only the big 3 are worth worrying about... none of which require you to submit your site. So yeah, it's a waste of time.

Yeah, Google, MSN, Yahoo responsible for over 90% of the traffic. But to get there You will need the support of quality links. Link popularity plays a big role. So links from Good Directories, Forums, Portals and etc. will helpfull. Not only the SE.

This bunch of sites proposing these submissions is a waste of time. You don't need to do anything to get your site listed in the main search engines, the bots will come by themselves.

yes like everyone else said the big 3 search engines is all that matters. It's funny because some times i get phone calls saying "we will list your site in thousands of search engines so you can increase sales this holiday seasons since most traffic comes from search engines". and i tell them no its ok only 3 search engines matter and i'm allready listed in them i just need to build links. And she keeps going on saying i'll guarantee you a listing in google msn and yahoo, i'm like as long as about 3-5 websites are linking to you you'll be listed. They just don't listen.

Just stick with Google, MSN, and Yahoo. Those are the only search engines you need to be in.

you dont need to submit to search engines, just get a link from a high pr site and your good to go..

thousands??? I think most online users prefer only to search on the big 3..

I have heard this statement often, but what is bad territory... if it is bad why are the bots traversing those pages - wouldn't they be banned at first sight and never visited again. ( What i am arguing is this doesn't matter but it wont help your cause either).

The FFA concept is dead i agree and there is no use to submit to those zombies... but if the bad territory is all that true... then hey i will place all my competitor websites in the bad territories by submitting their website to these places... (i mean even my adwords bully competitor :) )

In any case if the point is getting indexed in the SE's then the first natural step is placement in the right places of a good website...( PR doesn't matter - bot traffic matters)

cheers and good luck with the website.

The bad neighborhood thing supposedly only comes into play when you link out to one, not when they link to you. But, yeah, like everyone else said, the big 3, and perhaps a few choice directories (technorati, findory, icerocket, perhaps dmoz) are all you need.

From the Awstats statistics, 99% of my SE traffic are from google, a few of them are from msn. Almost 0 from yahoo. It seems that I just need pay attention to google and msn now. Yahoo collects only 156 pages of my site and I have no idea of how to improve that. :(

I agree. I'm delighted just that my unique keyword is easy to find for the people I am marketing to. I would love the rest of the world to wake up to it too. All in good time. ref: keyword = gasolineincome
