Subdomains

I had a quick search but couldn't find an answer to this question. How do search engines view subdomains when it comes to PR and ranking etc? If for example I have a high ranking site with good search results, then I add a few subdomains, will they benefit from the main site? or will they be treated as new websites?

    Yes,
it will be treated as new domain and u have to make link building and other things just like new site.
u can observe that if u have blog in any blogging site it will be treated as new site.
i hope now it is clear.

Thanks guys, yes that is pretty much what I thought. An interesting implication of that is that if subdomains are treated as seperate domains it would be theoretically possible to occupy the top 10 positions for any keyword by having 10 subdomains and marketing them all!

yep! sub-domains are treating as seperate entity and assigned PR independant of main domain.

But while pulling results for SERPs I really don't think Google will pull all sub-domains to rank them in top 10 as separate websites/listings. Here it will be treated as part of the main domain.

Sub-domains are treated as new sites by the search engines. But it doesn't happen with the sub-folders.
