Subdomains vs Directories - which is better

    Hey All,

I've read through the posts on here and other forums and the subdomain vs. question usually seems to be between subs and new domain names.

my question is Subdomains vs Directories.

My reason for using SubDomains is that I want to grow my site in a couple of ways, one of which is my articles section. By using articles.mydomain.com and making the webserver treat it as a new site, I get all the freedom of a new site but can use variations in the basic design to show vistors thay are in different sections of the main site.

    example:
    articles.mydomain.com
    bananas.mydomain.com
    oranges.mydomain.com

However, any suggestions how that might affect my Pagerank and SERPs.

I am a bit paranoid as I have just got #1-3 on most of the major engines for my terms and don't want to screw that up.

Would it be safe to stick to directories eg mydomain.com/oranges/

Hope thats' enough info for people to make suggestions.

    Ta.

    Steve
