subdomains, regular domains, pagerank -- relationships

When generating a good marketing strategy for a specific subdomain, does the pagerank propagate up to the domain as well or how are the two reflected in the eyes of Google? The subdomain has no link to the domain, it's purely on its own. Will the toplevel domain gain any PR benefits from the subdomain having a high PR?

As far as I know (and I well may be wrong), pagerank is given to individual pages, so the domain will not benefit unless there's a link.

That's what I thought initially, I just wanted to get some second opinions on the matter. I have a store setup using a subdomain and I'm going to be outranking the primary store now, just hoping I can get some better SEO then I'll be performing better than they are hehe...

we'll see how it goes. thanks for your 2 cents.

i once had my forum outranking my main site the forum had a pr 4 whilst the site was only a pr 3 .

What i did was syndicate some of the content onto the main site not under the alias then remove the content off the forum so as not to have duplicate content under the same domain.

I see so many blogspot blogs rank well, sometimes it makes me wonder if being a subdomain of a trusted authoritative site gives you a boost of some sort.

It is my understanding that sub-domains are treated as completely seperate domain names. That means they will need seperate link campaigns...directory submissions...etc.

I often wonder that as well, whether or not the top level domain matters or not. I wish I had a high profile domain I could test it with. I'll try to look around for one and then test it to see how it goes.
