Subdomains or Subfolders ??

    I'm thinking of creating one mixed web/article directory so here is the question:

    Is it better for SEO to have subfolder or subdomain structure e.g.

    articles.directory. com/health/
    VS
    directory. com/articles/health

    question can be generalized in the view of link directories like

    topcategory.directory. com/subcategory/
    VS
    directory. com/topcategory/subcategory

    Any practice / ideas about this?

    I agree that using subfolders is preferrable to using a subdomain as a subdomain would be more useful for an entirely different type of site than the main domain. I am not sure what any differences would be as far as SEO goes, just a matter of preference for me.

    Hey I like that avatar. Reminds of the old R Crumb and the 40 year old hippy type stuff from back in the 'day'

    Sub folders. Will make your site bigger and all the pages will gain from incoming links to the home page.

    for SEO its alright to have subdomain or subfolders. as you wish

    subdomain => Huge SEO work.
    subfolder => Less SEO work.

    *subdomains are treated as a new domain by major search engines.

    Larger sites rank better than smaller, it's a fact - although all the content must be related to have that benefit. So, subdomains for content that is different, subfolders for similar content. If the articles are all on a similar topic and will help the site to rank for it's main keyword then go subfolder.

    I like a sub domain for parts of the site that I want to promote as as separate site. For example, I have a forum and would like to build it up more, so I changed it to a sub domain so I can add it to directories and stuff to get more back links to it. But I still tie it to my main site.

    This makes sense because sub domains is treated as seperate sites.

    Well anyone who appreciates R Crumb cant be bad at all! Have you seen anything from a relatively new (when compared to Crumb) underground comic/artist named Peter Bagg?

    I used subdomains for my website but I'm wondering if it was the right decision now... seems a bit too late to change. :/
