Subdomains or new folders?

I was wondering, if I was to have a blog and a forum on a site is it better to have this:

    blog.mydomain.com & forum.mydomain.com

    Or

    mydomain.com/bog/ & mydomain.com/forum/

    Which is better for SEO?

I don't think it affects the SERP if you use either. I do it for myself, for organization, or if the site is a little too far detached from my main site. A blog heavily integrated I Would put as a subfolder. A forum is possibly a lot bigger, needs more attention, I would consider putting it as a subdomain. That also gives the user the ability to remember it easier too!

there is a big difference between sub-domains and directories. if you are going to host content which is completely different from the parent site and quite big like forum, news, blog etc then use a sub-domain. use directory when the content is big but is related to the site

Looks like, from the range of opinions, it doesnt really make too much difference.

I used to feel there were none or slight differences. However...

There is a difference and I can clearly show you. Type in "orlando vacation" into Google and notice that orlandovacation.com ranks #1 and packages.orlando.vacation.com ranks #3.

This is illustrative the Google views these more as two two different sites rather than one site. If sub directories were utilized the page might of achieved a #1 and #2 ranking or it might of simply ended up as a link under the other sites links. Creating subdomains allow the opportunity for a site to keep multiple top positions for the same phrase on the same page.

I am not saying it will stay this way forever, or that this used to be the case, but it is currently how it is handled by Google.

Also, I am new to these forums so if you found my insights of any value I'd certainly appreciate additions to my reputation.

What do others think about my take on this?
