Subdomains or landing pages

I have been tasked to try and create a decent system whereby we can promote products that we offer on a "rolling" basis, so that I can plan campaigns over a given time period, as we will be getting in specialist sales people for these campaigns.

The 2 systems I have looked at are..

    Subdomains
    productname.companysite.com
and the only page on there would be purely about the product itself and all the links will go to the main site.

    Landing Pages
    productname domain
and the only page on there would be purely about the product itself and all the links would go back to our "true" company site.

I must point out that I am fairly new to all this...

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Actually, munty, a landing page is ANY page in the site that a visitor lands on.

Why not use all your pages? For example: if you are talking about one subject, either in an article or ad, have them go to page A. If you are talking about something else, go to page B. If you are.....

That is, if I understand your post right.

oh, i thought a landing page was a specially designed page to entice customers in...

Our products system is dynamically driven, and all the pages are product.php? etc

I have read that most search engines arent keen on dynamic pages... so was looking at another method...

I am leaning towards targeted domain names of the products I need to aim for.. and then seo single pages and have the links from them going onto my main site...

Just hope that as I am using different domain names, but the layout etc will look the same as our "home" site...

this is all sooo confusing for the beginner..

    thanks for the reply though

Oops, yes, that is what I meant. I'm partially brain dead today. It's been a looooong day. :D

You aren't going to believe this but visitors coming in from search engines rarely buy. They are looking for free stuff, they are tire kickers, they are doing research....

Add on top of that the fact that it is the luck of the draw in being on page one.

Everybody and their cousin wants to be on page one, and what are there, 10 spots on each page???

There are, literally, thousands doing the same SEO, and many of them know what the are doing. They all can't fit on page one. Or, two, even. Not even all of the so-called "SEO experts" can fit there.

    So...are you the lucky type?

Sorry, believe it or not, but that is the reality of search engines.

Then throw in the fact that you are going to have to do advertising anyway if you want to be successful out there, so it doesn't matter if the site is php.

With all this in mind, if you are happy with the php, why do, what could or could not be some drastic overhauling???

Anyway, whatever you chose to do or believe, good luck with it.

I work in a specialised industry so that should reduce the tyre kickers hopefully..
what I want to be able to do is pick on certain products periodically and push those through the search engines, as we will have specialised sales staff in for certain time periods...

still not sure whether to go for url rewriting (something someone has suggested on another forum) subdomains, or buying domains to just promote products... as i thought you could only submit toplevel nowadays to the search engines, or can you submit specific urls as well?

thanks again for the replies, it is nice to have a little guidance..

Hi Munty, in answer to original question, from Google's perspective, sub-domains and sub-directories are now handled in the same way.

Personally, I prefer sub-domains, but you need access to your hosting to do that.

With regards to Landing Pages, here's an article I wrote on Home Page design, which has elements related the Landing Page design do's & don'ts.

If you're in a specialist industry, then some of the hard work has been done for you, in that you're going to know what keywords & phrases are irrelevant.

Also, there's a good chance your niche might not be too competitive. But that's just speculation on my part.

Find yourself a good keyword research tool, pick a hand full of keywords & phrases and start to refine them.

More often than not, you're going to find some unusual "long tail" phrases that you just wouldn't have thought of, which could well generate a tidy amount of traffic for you.

As an example niche survival, go onto Google and search for: "What is technology?", you should see Blah, Blah! Technology loitering in third hole.

That's nothing more than me giving what it wants to see.

I'm assuming that you're new, so start with my 5 minute SEO primer, and when you're done, find out what the search engines really want from your website.

    Hope that helps?

many thanks for this, i will be taking the time to go through your site.

I might actually do a comparison between the 2 as we have already purchased a couple of new domains for this use, so it might be a good exercise...

once again thanks for your help
