No, I'm not sure where you read that, but subdomains are NOT counted toward your rank what so ever. Subdomains are counted as individual sites, www.examples.com is 100% different then example.example.com They can't hurt you, they are rated as their OWN site, 100% unique from the www.example.com site. That is why you need to be careful about http://example.com and www.example.com both working for your site, because http://example.com and http://www.example.com are 100% different sites and if they are showing the exact same site could be effecting you because of a duplicate content problem.
Blog.blogspot.com and blogs.wordpress.com would be doomed then, wouldn't they? In fact Sub Domains are good for SEO.. To create related sites and linking back to the main domain.
But how about this: • http://www.yourdomain.com (the "www" version) • http://yourdomain.com (the "non-www" version)
You need to make sure one redirects to the other, that or that each has 100% different content.. Setup your .htaccess file and pick one or the other.
I never heard that subomains hurt seo and make your site prone to down infact each subdomain if linking from it to your any of home page or page linked with your domain can be counted as a backlink and they can sound to be more beneficial to you for your rankings. If this would have been true that subdomains hurt seo then there would have been blogspot and wordpress blogs and no web hosting companies which offers free hosting and subdomains would have offered to destroy their business. Though Iam not an seo expert but still feel that is the way all things work.
linsys, can post what would be in a .htaccess file for this. I read that Yahoo gets suspicious with a lot of subdomains orbiting around a main domain, but what do I know.
Here's what I use for htaccess: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.mydomain.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [L,R=301] And I agree, subdomains can't hurt you unless you're doing very spammy stuff with them.
I think subdomains will not hurt SEO.I am having two sites and each have +4 sub domains. When my main domain have PR4 othrs have PR3 and PR2.
subdomains don't necessarily hurt SEO. There are instances where they can be used to your benefit but there are also times when its better to use a subfolder like mysite.com/folder/ one benefit of subdomains is being able to get 10 of your sites listed in a google serp whereas with a folder, you can only get 2.
