I was just curious, do subdomains effect the search engine placement? For example, all other factors aside, which would rank better for 'Sports Forum'?

    sports.com
    forum.sports.com

    Thanks

So if I have a site that's ONLY a forum, should I redirect the domain to forums.mydomain.com or leave it as mydomain.com?

google considers sub domains a new website and not associated with your main domain, naturally if you have duplicate content then this will receive a penalty

sticking a forum on the root domain limits your ability to do anything else with your domain,

in the words of matt cutts, if you are installing a blog then do not install the blog in the root domain but rather put it in a folder (called blog for example) and then point the install to the root so that it appears the blog reside on the root domain

You can either try to get a good subdomains like using name in the sub domain instead of using number or coding...try to promote them as well
