If a business had the url www.example.com. And they created a website for gamers, but they don't want a new domain, so they just make the site as gamers.example.com where in this case the gaming site is in no way related to the business other than that they created it. If someone did this, would that be bad for SEO? How about on the user prospective? What would be different if they bought a new .com domain? I am just curious about this. Thanks!
With the cost of domain name registration and reliable hosting hardly being a bank-breaker why not set up a new site and go with that rather than an unrelated sub-domain. It would be more appropriate I'd suggest and give a greater "identity" so to speak. Yours, Andy.
Sub-domains or folder structure... It really doesn't matter. As long as you have good content on your website, it makes no difference at all. Perfect example - about.com
Sub-domains are not bad for SEO and are used by many larger sites, they allow you to target a different area that your main site is not focussed on, just remember though that Google treats a sub-domain as a new site so you need to make sure you create a whole new structure, sitemap etc.
Sub domains are not bad but it need to use carefully because if you will make some thing wrong then it will damage your site business as well. So the concept is sub domain is separate new site and apply your all idea's accordingly.
I have experienced this problem in the past, i had a few subdomains but they didn't indexed by google.
I have used subdomains many times, while not the best way to start and run a new site, it hasn't cause an issue, but keep an eye on google, as things are in constant change...
Subdomains are domains by they own right, and are indexed as such. It doesn't penalize you at all. The so-called 2nd-level ccTLDs (e.g., co.uk) are actually subdomains of the corresponding ccTLD (in this example, .uk). If they were penalized, nobody would buy them. Note however that being separe domains they do NOT inherit the page rank of the parent domain! You need to perform your SEO separately for such subdomains. Obvious, unless you link to those subdomains, Google will never find them. As I stated, they are domains by their own right, so you need to inform Google (by submitting the subdomain, creating links to them, etc.) that they exist!
It won't give any negative things to the main website, the only thing is that if the subdomain is related to the main page it can give an extra amount of returning visitors to the main blog

I totally agree with you, think of About.com, it has now becoming authority site over the web! So we should understand this thing. One thing is very important is link building of your main domain, if you build link for your main domain then it would be also advantageous for sub domains also!
Thanks for all your posts! Do you think the effect of a long domain, because of a large subdomain name, would be an issue? For example, I own MarcusKrueger.net what if I made a site about the Cash Gopher program and named it CashGopherScam.MarcusKrueger.net Would that really be an issue? Don't 90% of people just bookmark pages anymore anyway?
