I want to start a portal, what is better to use, especially from seo point of view:

    chat.mydomain.com
    poll.mydomain.com

    or mydomain.com/poll and mydomain.com/chat ?

    or it does not matter?

Also is it bad if mydomain.net redirect to chat.mydomain.com for example?

So go for new domain, so that you can redirect it when you feel so.

I will buy 5 new domains:

one will be my main domain for the portal

the other 4 will redirect to subdomains on the first domain name.

the question is there a problem in this from seo point of view?

the second question is better to redirect these domains to mydomain.com/poll or to poll.mydomain.com or it does not matter?

    Thank you

    (1) At seo point of view, I think subfolder can do better. Subfolder will be treated as a part of main site and will bring overall weight to site in SE eyes.

    (2) If you are re-directing then .... I think again sub-folder. The redirect should be 301. It will pass PR and weight also.

Sub-domains are treated as different domains in search engines eye. They only do the purpose of marketing one name.

It will not be bad if you start on a sub domain as

even the digitalpoint forums are on the sub domain

    forums.digitalpoint.com

    I hope you understand

Go for a mega site - the SEs love them

Use a sub domain for your chat and poll.

Think about this - you're chat isn't going to be spiderable.
