    Hello,

i'm willing to open a site that has multiple services, maybe 3-5 different services and i want them all in one site

i'll make a portal in the main page with links to the different services in the site

the question is, will it make difference to make those services in subdomains or subfolders ?

some people say different subdomains don't get the same page rank of the main page but subfolders do

is this right ? please i need more explanation about this

Google hates sub domains, Matt Cutts has spoken about it. I'm not sure about subfolders

I dont think, that google dosnt like subdomains. Exampels on the web are wikipedia, yahoo, altavista ..... they all use subdomains for the different languages..??! Thats my opinion :) (I hope im right, because I use subdomains..)

in the eyes of google, subdomains are considered a different domain, so yes, different page ranks. you can, however, build up PR within a subfolder and 301 it to a subdomain.

    adwords.blogspot.com
    PR: 7 | Age: 03-2004 | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 133,003

    adsense.blogspot.com
    PR: 0 | Age: 12-2002 | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 62,532

    analytics.blogspot.com
    PR: 8 | Age: - | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 1,026,769

now some random blogs from blogger and worpress

    sweetheavens.blogspot.com
    PR: 2 | Age: ? | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 8

    datbury.blogspot.com/
    PR: 3 | Age: - | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 8

    reverendted.wordpress.com
    PR: 7 | Age: - | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 2,763

    tvlover.wordpress.com
    PR: 0 | Age: ? | Y! Links: ? | Alexa: ? | MSN Links: 138

i think we have a case to study here
    different subdomains have different PR

    PS
1- those are random blogs and i don't own them and they even don't have any kind of ads, so don't be silly and accuse me of asking for some clicks

2- Firefox SEO extension used to determine those data

    kreationstudio.com PR4

    seotools.kreationstudio.com PR5

    What say !

It all depends upon how you work on SEO for that subdomain.
Every big websites use sub domains as their product catalog.
That does not mean subfolders are bad either.. It depends !

my point is that if subdomains have different page rank, then it will take me 5 more times more work to improve the page rank of a domain+4 subdomains than improving page rank of 1 domain that is including 4 subfolders ;)

bow there is another question, does different subfolders have different PR ?

Buddy PR to subfolders depends upon your internal linking and deep linking from other sites.

Lets say that you have a site about cars and later you decided to open sites for mercedes, bmw ...

If you open those sites as subdomains and put their links in the old domain then you can transfer a good amount of PR. Although i dont have enough cases to be sure, this is what i experienced. In fact i did not get any penalty sicne this is a very logical thing to do..

So if subdomains are very related to domain and expected to have large amount of contents, i prefer subdomain approach! Since at the end, you have lots of sites compared to one site in subfolder approach. But obviously it can be easier to transfer PR to subfolders..
