say i have forum named perlwhatever.com

my preferred keywords are "perl forums"

Is setting up subdomain like forums.perlwhatever.com good idea ?

    Means,

    keywords: perl forums

    is it better
    perlwhatever.com
    or
    forums.perlwhatever.com

    ??

Also, is it possible that subdomain hurts the ranking and SERP ?

    Thanks

I think the main root domain will have a stronger PR than the subdomain thus giving it a better chance of ranking in my opinion. Try the usual SEO/link building roots on your normal root domain would be my advice

I have seen several discussions on whether the forum should be in a subdomain, root, or folder. To get the best keywords, either have the forum in a subdomain or folder. But, I have seen at least one forum that was moved from a /forum folder to a subdomain, and the urls to the new location were not switching over. So once you make your decision stick with it.

As for it helping you get a good ranking, I have seen both configurations rank well in google.

I would use a subdomain too.
Clearer for your visitors, and bots will like it too.
