Subdomain vs Different Domain

Which is better seo-wise in the long term?

For example, I just noticed this site is a subdomain. Is it better
as sub than as digitalpointforums.com by itself?
My thinking is that as a subdomain the various components help
one another - ie. - links, content, etc. combined.
Also, a high PR link pointed at your homepage...does it filter out
to the sub? IOW....high PR link pointing to digitalpoint.com
also have direct benefit to forum.digitalpoint.com?

    Thanks :)

I don't know if additional PR weight is handed out because of sub domain or not, or if it filters it out or not. However, in terms of links, the subdomain for DP includes "forums" so that is an additional keyword that may help with SEO.
