This has probably been asked before but I can't find it I have a site on which I want to add a shop section.Would I be best creating a sub domain for this ie shop.mysite.com or just a directory ie mysite.com/shop. They are easy to set up but I'm wondering about search engines, submitting to directories and advertising etc. Which option would you guys recommend? TIA
Directory would be my choice as it benefits from the domains age, sub domain is classed as a new site
That is someting I didn't know.I certainly don't want to start afresh with it. Thanks for the heads up sji2671
That's right. I have a domain with 6 years, that when a new directory is added, it's instant success (or almost )
One of the advantages of using a sub-domain is that you can easily see how many pages Google has indexed...
a subdomain is sometimes recognised as a seperate site - hence i'd go with folders if trying to keep everything together.
That is not a good enough reason. Folders/directories give you the added advantage of giving the new area age as already discussed. If you wanted to see how many pages google had listed for your new folder just use site:http://www.thedomain/folder and you can see how many pages in that folder google has listed so certainly no need for a sub-domain for that.
So why would a person use a subdomain? The sandbox can take more than 6 monthes. Why deal with it? Are there any advantages to using a subdomain? Brandon
You can also put sub-domains on different IPs and servers. The 6 months for the sandbox does not seem to affect ccTLDs as much
Advantages? In certain applications there are obvious advantages. You could be offering individual contributors and/or clients blogs or home pages attached to your site. Similar to blogger.com I have also created records for subdomains that people might accidentally type in when trying to get to my website. This is less an advantage, more a solution. It could also be useful in creating secure pages you did not want people to readily discover. Combined with a login page and SSH this could improve site security by making it harder for hackers to know the location of admin login pages.
