    A domain is www.domain.com...

    A subdomain would be forum.domain.com or travel.domain.com

As far as traffic goes - as long as you SEO your pages right, I'd think you could potentially get a similar amount of traffic for either.

A subdomain can cause confusion with non-techie users and where you can type www.digitalpoint.com in emails or posts you have to put the http:// in for a subdomain for the link to go live automatically.

I've just moved my blog from a subdomain where it did VERY well but I didn't want it to be tied permanently. However on the www.nzpif.org.nz site we've used subdomains for each region and hope to have an increased presence in the SERPs because of that.

Sort of along the same thread as sarahk says - from a non-techie standpoint, your regular Joe is probalby going to remember "www.something.com" rather than "otherword.something.com" -- you might catch more traffic from word of mouth advertising that way.
