Which would be better for SEO for a directory site?

shopping.MyDirSite.com
health-and-fitness.MyDirSite.com

or

www.MyDirSite.com/shopping
www.MyDirSite.com/health-and-fitness

or

www.MyDirSite.com/directory/shopping
www.MyDirSite.com/directory/health-and-fitness

Not the 3d option.

The other two depends on what you want to achieve.

If the main domain is small in page count, you can benefit a lot from the folder option. If the directory will rank for similar phrase as the main domain, you can nick another first page spot by makin git a subdomain.

the main domain has limited content - just links to the niche directories available

I think I'll go with the directories option (#2)

In light that the real domain name doesn't have 'directory' in it, shoudl I still avoid #3

 

Only go for 3 if people actually search for 'xyz directory' - which I doubt they'll do.
