Subdomain Host

Anyone know of a Linux host that will host subdomains? I would be a bonus if they will install wordpress.

I have an asp.net site on a windows server. I want to add a blog to the site. I don't like the way wordpress works on a windows server so I want to host the subdomain elsewhere and point an A Record to the subdomain.

I think it's no problem with almost any host but you need to do the redirectthing probly yourself. Do you have access to your dns settings of your domainname? If you do you need to setup your subdomain and point it to the new hostingaccount. Or you could explain the new host what you want to do and see if they can help you. Good way to test their level of support too.

I can do it from my side.

I called Godaddy, they will not host subdomains.

To use them I would need to point a domain to the site hosted by them and then redirect to the domain. Or I suppose I could get a unique IP from godaddy then I could point the A record for my subdomain to the ip.

Get a hosting account with cpanel somewhere, just invent a domain name for it. Then add the subdomain as add-on domain.

I'm a little foggy on how domains and subdomains work, but I don't think that will work. This is my understanding on hosting.

A (virtual) host will have many domain names on the same IP.

When a visitor comes in (is directed to an IP) the host computer then directs the visitor to the right folder based on the domain name used.

If I invent a domain name and create a subdomain the subdomain is for the domain created. Just changing the A record to the correct IP of this subdomain will not get it to the right folder.

For this to work properly, the second host needs to know that this subdomain is for a "foreign" domain.

I suppose that I could tell the Second host it is hosting my real domain, and create a subdomain. Being that I would not point the domains DNS at this second host, Traffic would go to Host 1 and the location of the real site, when someone tries to go to the subdomain, Host one would then send the traffic to the second host based on the A Record.

It's possible this might work, but I would like to have someone more familiar with how hosting servers work confirm this.

Anyone out there with some advanced knowledge?

Well, Godaddy said this would not work. I called another host that said it would. Sounds like it will work to me, and you said it would work.

So I'm going with the majority and giving it a try. Thanks for the input. :)

It will work fine for any cpanel hosting. Just you need to create a subdomain and change the A record.

I'll host the subdomain for you free of charge if you want to link back to me, I'll even help you setup the "A" records and get Word Press going :).
