    I have a US website. Let's call it abcxyz.com

If I want to build a German website and aim for traffic from Google.de, which should I choose?

    1. abcxyz.de
    2. de.abcxyz.com
    3. abcxyz.com/de/

    Thanks in advance

the registrars are sometimes limiting country extensions to people that can prove they have an address in that country I'm not sure if Germany is included but you may want to check that out.

Ideally you want to make sure you include in your plan translation into the native language such as German. I have about 80% German clients on one of my websites and I will tell you that it's very difficult to communicate with them however most Germans speak English better than we were ever speak German so it's not that bad.

But to answer your question it goes back to the same question as subdomains or subfolders. Over the past eight years I don't think anyone has ever definitively proven which works better. It's a matter of page quality and I think that's why it has never made any difference.

So for you the question is easier to deploy and manage afterward. Content management especially in other languages can be quite a task.

    Definitely:
    1. abcxyz.de

Always try to use regional domain if possible (which is not always).
a). Regional domain is much better for possible future type-in traffic, otherwise you will loose your type-in visitors. In even worst case, they will go to your competitors, because if you will not buy your regional domain, your competitors will surely do that at some time in future.
    b) It is much easier to promote regional domain to local people. For example you may include it to local search engines, directories, crossroad pages, etc. – these usually don’t allow sub domains of .com They allow only local top-level domains e.g.: .de

Same here, you will find ranking higher at Google.de and for people from Germany much easier with the .de extension/

I would also recommend using the .de extension. I think that you will do best with that one.

The ccTLD is definitely the best approach. If you don't take it, someone else will.

Always go the IDN, google privileges them more in the local google search. So going the .de domain name will most likely rank you much higher in Google Germany. The benefits will greatly outweigh the cost.
