You just submit your post/page to stumbleupon and if other people like it, they will stumble it and you will get more visitors.

You can also add a button to your post to get more people to vote on it thru stumbleupon

There's a link down the bottom of the page at Stumbleupon to tools and buttons you can put on your site to make it easy for people to 'stumble' pages or posts they like. Or if you're on wordpress you can use a social media plugin.

The point of stumbleupon is that it's a popularity contest, so take note of which posts get traffic from there, and what's on their front page, and write a few things to try to get that interest going.

Word of caution: be careful about 'stumbling' your own posts. Stumble too much from one domain and you could get your account cancelled. If, on the other hand, you stumble lots of other stuff as you're surfing (the firefox toolbar is handy for this) then the occasional stumble when you've written something good won't hurt. Of course, if it doesn't catch interest, you won't catch traffic from it. It's good training in writing headlines, at the very least, though!

    Good luck.
PS Feel free to check out how I've put the stumble button up on my site at http://crystalsquest.com - you could even click it to test the process :D
Oh, and you might like to check out how my traffic spiked when someone stumbled one of my 'just for fun' posts before Christmas - the pic is below

StumbleUpon is not DoFollow so it's completely useless SEO-wise.
As for traffic, all you need is as much stumbs as possible on your site / URL.
Make all your friends in MSN/Yahoo/ICQ/Skype to stumble your URL and that's it.
StumbleUpon could bring a lot of traffic but it depends on the niche obviously ;)

Don't expect many clicks or sales though...

Stumbleupon has brought traffic to my website in spikes of a few hundred views a day when one article gets a few stumbles but overall the traffic from it doesn't covert well at all. I still do use stumble as well as Digg etc but it isn't something anyone should rely on for good traffic, many people just think they are wastes of bandwidth.

I tried to use Stumbleupon but it seemed that I had to pay to have my site registered with them. Is this correct? Is there a way of getting a backlink for free? Also, if - as Zexy said - it is not DoFollow then, as far as backlinks are concerned, it's not much use.

do not use suexchange at all, it really sucks, if you want to exchange stumbles then join a forum like firstorm or forumfinder :D

As I understand it you have to have a stumbleupon tool bar to stumble a site so it seems that there is no need for a stumbleupon button. I have a stumbleupon tools bar and click on I like it if I want to stumble a site. If there is a advantage to having a button on my site with SU tell me but it seems like it is something that would just clutter my home page up.

i would not spend any time on getting traffic form stumble as it is useless traffic that never converts and have high bounce rate. however, if you are using stumble traffic to boost up your squidoo or hubpages internal ranking, then it is useful that way

I've had some massive traffic spikes from SU, but it's never really converted particularly well. I've also heard that Google reduces it's Adsense payouts for traffic from SU . . . can anyone qualify that? (i'm not into Adsense)

I've not heard specifically if adsense pays lower for stumbleupon traffic, but I do believe adsense targets ads not just on the page content, but also on the previous browsing habits of the user.

So if a user "stumbles" on several pages with low paying ads like entertainment sites, and then "stumbles" to a page that would normally have high paying ads, that user may still get ads targetted to the previous lower paying pages they visited.

With all the criticizing of stumbleupon why is it so popular> After all I read that it was sold for millions of dollars. After seeing the only benefit form SU may be with squidoo I want to know how SU benefits my Squidoo lens.

Obviously you are generalising here and going with the majority.

However I have used SU for the last 3 months and my bounce rate has dropped ever since I started using it. Obviously I have my own techniques for picking the correct people to be friends with but all in all its pretty simple to keep the BR down.

The traffic in my opinion is excellent a lot of the traffic for myself tends to convert to subscribers or followers who stumble many of my articles.

    Will.

Its true stumble drive more traffic only if you have a quality website and service while rest is not very hopefull. Still you can use to bring visit from it.

the best part of stumbleupon is , if your site is really good, people will appreciate it and stumble it. They also give you a good and unique review. The community will know about your site and you get more and more visit. But if you are using suexchange like site, people will stumble it - but as user comments are either duplicate or very short, people will not going to visit your site.

My blog is running adsense and there are so many people saying that traffic from su might get your adsense account banned. I just don't want to take the risk
