StumbleUpon - why I am getting so much traffic?

    Hello,

I am quite experienced in search marketing but StumbleUpon is a mystery to me. I know how it works but I cannot understand why I am getting so much traffic. Every week for last couple of weeks there are days where I get like 10k visitors a day for my site - http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk - all from StumbleUpon.

Does anyone knows how it can be possible? My assumption is that it works similarly as Digg as one guy says Thumbs Up, couple of guys more say the same and it gets promoted somewhere on the homepage?

Let me know your thought. Thanks

Do you have a strong SU profile?
Or maybe an influential SU member thumbed up your site.

Im also interested in the answer to this. I have experience with other forms of marketing, but I would like to learn how the stumbelupon algorythm works and how to make the most of it to our advantage.

    Thanks in advance!

I have registered there couple of months ago but never really used it. So I doubt it. How can I find out who stumbled my site?

Install the SU toolbar and when on your website go to that bubble, next to "Send to". You will then see people that stumbled your site :)

Thanks man. I have tried that:

    This is the page:

    http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/

There are just couple of people there who liked my site. It seems weird that this had resulted in thousands of visits.

Did you check your logging to see if it is working properly?

    Did you contact StumbleUpon?

Maybe one of those users that stumbled has a strong profile. Check the PR of their profiles and see.

Why should he contact SU? :))

I am using SU for a couple of months. I had no success from it, but when I moved my blogspot blog to own domain and started posting/stumbling funny images, I started receiving hundreds of daily visitors from Stumbleupon alone. I guess stumblers love funny images too much and are more likely to give them thumb-up. :)
I guess you posted some interesting content, and this link you posts:
    http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
shows only people who stumbled your pain page. Maybe some of your internal pages are stumbled a lot, but your stats show it for the whole site. Check out which pages are most visited (Google Analytics has this feature).

I have checked the Google Analytics but most of the visits really go to the homepage (There aren't many pages on my site anyway).

I really can't figure it out yet :(.

    The traffic patterns were like:

last wednesday - about 2000 referrals from stumble upon
then just couple hundred every day till tuesday this week
    this tuesday - around 3000
    yesterday - around 9800..

looking forward for the stats from today..

Logging is definitely correct. The amount of speed test executed and Google Analytics match more or less.

WHere can I contact them? :) do you think they will bother? :)

What's the point of contacting them? Some people even pay for getting traffic. You should be happy with it. This means your site has some unique and good content.

Chances are someone with authority stumbled it, and that will get lots you lots of traffic even if very few others stumbled it. Just sit back and enjoy it.

I know, I should just sit and relax but that's not me. I am always analyzing my traffic and want to learn how to get more. This is easy with search engines but with StumbleUpon I am in the dark.

I have tried to check all the people who have stumbled my site and compared to Top Stumblers list but no match found.

Do you guys know how to find out if a stumbler is influential?

You need to contribute a lot by discovering a lot of sites, which are then stumbled a lot of times. Strong stumbleupon profiles have at least 10,000 liked pages. This doesn't mean that you can stumble everithing. :) You must keep a good SU blog too.

That is my point of view, but no one really knows how to become "strong stumbler".

    Mrgee,

You have completely made it clear to myself :) Now it all make sense. If I want to have a strong profile I should be stumbling the sites which are then stumbled by Thumbs up with many people. THat in the end works for all the community so interesting sites gets promoted.

Looking at the people who stumbled my site - there are some guys who are very influential - especially fatgadget 45257 stumbles and schizodiary 12k stumbles

I imagine these guys have promoted my site. Good stuff :)
