StumbleUpon Test

Today I did an interesting test with StubleUpon with out really meaning too. I created several single webpages on an existing domain and submitted them all to StumbleUpon at the same time.

One of them I put a bunch of funny celebrity photos, another had some weird sports photos & injuries, and the 3rd had a flash game viewers could play.

On all 3 pages I had at least 2 adsense blocks with unique channels , just to see if they would get some clicks.

Within 2 hours, the celebrity photo page had over 5000 pageviews, and I had made about $5.00 in adsense revenue. Lousy CTR I know, but this took me about 5 minutes to create the page. After 8 hours, I checked Analytics and that page had 5000 unique visitors ( which makes sense because it's only one page).

The sports page had several hundred views and no revenue, and the game page had under 100 views and no revenue.

I'm not exactly sure how to analyze this data. I get the idea that "Stumblers" like to see photos as opposed to reading text and seem to like celebrity/gossip type of stuff. Most probably have a short attention span and a photo will keep their attention long enough so that they might stop for a second, and possibly click something else on the page.

I've never been a huge fan of StumbleUpon traffic for most of my sites, because it's very untargeted traffic that doesn't convert well. But there might be some merit in it if you submit the right kind of site or page. I'm going to experiment with it more and see if I can find any other trends.

I think that I"m going to consider stumbleupon on driving some traffic to my blog now.

This is the page that got all the action. It ended up with about 7000 unique visitors with over 12,000 page views in less than 12 hours. Didn't make much money, but I learned a lesson about what might work on Stumbleupon in the future. These were just photos that someone sent me in an email.

Interesting test. I find myself stopping at photos pretty often when I'm stumbling. It would probably be a good pipeline into your main site if you could tie them together.

That is very interesting. It may just be a fluke, who knows. I haven't had much success with that type of traffic either, but then again, I've never really put fourth any real effort into converting it.
