I see a lot of people asking for people to stumble thier websites. Does anyone know if StumbleUpon is OK with this? Is it like Digg where it is discouraged, or is it OK since SU is a bookmarking site?

Someone on here contacted StumbleUpon. It is okay to ask someone to read your website, but asking for any specific rating is discouraged. May want to confirm that info.

I don't recall reading anywhere that it was NOT ok to ask for stumbles.
Stumbleupon does not explictly forbide it.

well we need to think that stumble upon is just a one day traffic booster its not really a consistent flow of traffic - if it was consistent then it would be well worth to get into - but its not

I have written several post, a case study, etc on several SU projects I have done - and it usualyl results in one day traffic

Maybe it depends on the type of site? I have a few video game sites that get 100+ a day from SU, but that might be luck.

For the topic at hand, SU "overlooks" people asking for stumbles.

So, its basically just like Digg or what? So, traffic isn't consistent or anything? Can you prove this?

here is my case study on this:
    http://www.ianfernando.com/2007/stump-on-stumbleupon/

it shows that I have burst of traffic and every week I get usually 1 or 2 burst of traffic and then it goes back to my normal flow of traffic by SEO etc

SU can give u huge one day traffic
social bookmark sites can give you HUGE traffic - yes

there is a difference with SU and other social bookmark sites

Who cares whether they encourage it or discourage it?

Google discourages SEO and artificial link building, MFA and other stuff but people do it all the time regardless of the fact that they could earn a ban.

What's the difference if someone posts a stumble exchange on the forum or just asks (or emails) their friends to do it?

It's the Internet, it's social and that's the whole point. It also serves to increase THEIR status and traffic so I'm sure they don't mind. :)
