Hi, im trying to get links + visitors to my site I am pretty new to everything still and I can make a site, make it seo but I do not know how to get search engine visitors at all.

1 site I have was submitted to 500 directories and its a PR3 but it still gets very little visitors via search engines. its about 7 months old now.

is there some secret to getting more visitors without spending $$ which I dont have.

reason I ask is I see people start new sites and about 1 month down the track have more traffic than me :(

    Good topic
This thread title and link was just added to my fun new directory.
You can also submit your site for a free link if you want.
Please, use the best category for your site.

based from my experience, i get traffic from classified ads site. i try to advertise the services offered by my site.

plus of course, i didn't stop doing directory submission, article submission, and link exchange.

I would recommend you try Automated Link Programs.
They will provide you free non-reciprocal links from related websites.

Build good content and then find sites that are likely to want to know about your great content - and mail them (friendly and personally) about it. That is: get quality links, not just quantity. Not ALL LINKS WERE CREATED EQUAL.

Agree, some social bookmarking sites could also bring great results (if the content is great :))

Same as the 3 posters ahead of me.
Write kick ass content and submit it somewhere (it doesn't really matter where if its good).
In theory, if enough people see it and its really unique, some small percentage of them have a blog and some small percentage of those don't know what to write about next and some small percentage of those will link back to you.
Doesn't sound like much, but I have been on the front page of Digg twice and each time I collected a bunch of links from all sorts of related blogs and even a small news outlet.
If your content is really good, people will bookmark your site and come back over and over again.
My Photo site gets a lot of traffic but most of it doesn't even come from Google (I am not trying to say that it has kick ass content, so don't take it as an example ;) )

In addition to backlinks from directories, you also need backlinks from sites that have relevant content to your site. Plus keep creating fresh content for your site. This will help you get better rankings & make it easier to get better quality backlinks, which will also help your rankings.

Content is one of the reason visitor will visit your site or return to see whether got newer things. Make the content interesting, unique with own words. Secondly, you can spread out the words by adding your site to Bookmark Website like mentioned in Social Book marking Site Submission(Link building tips and resources). A lot of explanation is done over the link.

Some website do gets alot of visitor but some doesn't, patient is also required and sometime it require also time. The highway of internet is fast as 1 second it can spread out thousand to million of information. While your website's information might be even 0.01% of it, or even might be higher.

Good luck on the highway, drive slowly and carefully. :)

Could you provide a bit more information? What is the site? what does it do? what does it provide? If you could be a little more specific there might be something you are missing from your marketing...

Depends upon your target audience, i got a website for engineering student across India or later mayb Asia, I know for a fact a person who would do half of my work will get more traffic if he has website for dating, social networking, or some general discussion place. What you should be more concerned about is, are you getting the people to your website whom you're targetting.
There's no point in having a person visit your website looking for chicks if your website talks about food increases the no., but doesnt really add value or beneficial in long run.

I get over 100 visitors/ month from Digital point. All I did was drop a relevant link to some great content in the forum once.

So here is what i would do and why:

    Method:
    • Create unique and highly useful content.
    • link to aforementioned content from MULTIPLE directly related forums
    • repeat.

    Why?
    • Forums are filled with two types of people: not saavy people, looking for answers, tech saavy people that participate and have blogs or their own sites.
    • You'll get traffic from the people looking for information
    • You'll get links from the tech saavy people

Make sure whatever you link to is RELEVANT, USEFUL and ORIGINAL

Yeah I reckon forums can be a great way of driving traffic to websites :) I feel really bad putting in a direct link now to promote my stuff, but i'll put my site in my signature when I can get one. It's a shopping site and you can submit you site to it and appear under certain tags when users search.

Also it's good to get a few really good links, worth a lot more than lots of rubbish ones.

I guess the other thing to consider is the SEO importance of links from forums which can be a lot less if they have nofollow attributes on all outgoing links, as I think some forums do these days.

p.s. mtb167 I think you need to see a doctor you're looking a little off colour!

    I look dead sexy.

    Or possibly dead. Whichever...

I don't feel bad about dropping links as long as they help the people in the forum. A lot of times, the stuff you create needs a good deal of html markup or pictures that you can't place in a forum, but its still very useful to forum visitors. It helps the forum because you're uploading free unique content, and it helps you - even if the link has rel=nofollow

well ive got 2 sites a arcade site and a wallpaper site.

    http://www.arcaderush.net - PR3

    http://www.wallpaperpoint.net (still under dev) - PR0

I know they are highly competative subjects but I still see newer sites still getting more traffic than what I see.

Ive had burst traffic from stumbleupon before but I do not recieve that anymore :(.

With arcaderush I see that I get just under 50% visitor return rate so I guess thats good. Im currently changing adsence around to different formats ect. as I am wanting to see what brings in more $$.

I am looking to promote wallpaperpoint more now but being images I wouldnt have a clue where to start.

The thing that makes my arcade unique is it has a radio :p

i'd recommend trying to link with or purchase some links on myspace layout sites, sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate...

similar sites may be getting more traffic than you but you don't know if they have purchase links or myspace buddy lists etc, so dont waste time comparing.
