I have been in the SEO game since 2002. In fact, one of my first websites that I conducted SEO on was a think tank in Washington D.C. If you Google think tanks washington d.c. or (dc) you'll find Hudson Institute on the first page It has been there since May, 2002 (without further enhancements) I say this because, I have noticed that Structure and NOT inbound links have become even more important to high ranking websites. Everything down from Matching Searched Keyword and Phrases with the site's Title Tags, URL (URI) folder names, to H1 tags, optimized content, H2 tags - customer 404 error pages, XML sitemaps, Robot.txt pages, and don't forget site buildouts (expanding the site to the utterly ridiculous information architecture) and submitting to Google via webmaster tools. I've taken every single website I've worked on to Google's first page in the past 3 years within 5 weeks. Seems lately, it is the really difficult things (webmaster-type stuff) that is having an impact I'm open to hearing your feedback. (oops, BTW -- that is not all I've done to the site - but regarding optimization, structure seems to be the most effective).
I will have to agree with you there. Onsite SEO activities are being constantly led down by Google, so in my experience META tags, H1 tags, Robots etc all account for 10% - 15% of the total SEO efforts. To me, right now I think there are three things that are of high importance. 1) The amount of unique keyword enriched content your website has. 2) The number of inbound links to your website. 3) The age of the domain name. I'm sure there are many arguments to this theory but this is what I personally feel.
A well designed webpage who follows Google's guidelines well be enough as the website structure.. and it will drive the handsome traffic too...
I took this website from nothing to Google's first page for 16 (or more) different keyword phrases - it is the business for Sinnott Tree Service (I won't post the link) in illinois. All I did, was change the structure, add some pages (geo location and service pages), put h1 tags in, better meta tags, xml sitemap and other google webmaster tools stuff - This site went from nowhere to everywhere quickly. All structure improvements and site buildout. This was just the latest of many - not bragging, just taking note that it was all structure. The age of the site is about 7 months old.
