After a good think, I’ve finally decided to sell my website, www.strictlysauce.com, as SEO is no longer my game. It hurts, believe me, as I poured many, MANY hours of blood and sweat into making this site work as it does, not to mention writing 149 sauce recipes myself within a few weeks which, as you know, would have cost an absolute fortune if I had paid a writer to do this!

Revenue is earned through AdSense, which, I will tell you, is only currently running one single 468x60 banner on each page, which are far outperformed by the bigger AdSense blocks, so I could have earned myself more money. So why didn’t I change it, you ask? Basically, after writing all of those sauce recipes and immersing myself in the whole thing for weeks on end, I was burned out, and around a month later decided I’d had enough and no longer wanted to bother with the site, including doing a simple thing like changing a few lines of code on 2 templates. So, you can increase the earnings a lot here right away, simply by doing this. It’s a shame I never bothered to give this site the attention and winning chance it truly deserves, but that is your gain as I am about to let it go.

Before I decided to exit the SEO game, I did, however, shell out $69.95 for a year’s entry into BOTW, which I believe still has a fair few months remaining, AND I submitted the site to DMOZ almost 4 months ago, so it may not be much longer before it is even in there, the internets most highly prized directory.

To appease the search engines and keep the content fresh, when I set the website up, I have had articles being added by schedule automatically and gradually, once every few days right up until around March 15th, when the last one came on. The front page of the website shows the latest 10 articles, newest to the top, so the front page is always fresh.

A little bit of how the site runs:

• Hosted in the US since it’s inception, to ensure US search engines accepted it
• Very clean, smart, fast-loading and simple design
• SE friendly URLS
• 100% original content – all articles written by me, an Englishman (Americanized English, however, to curry favor with US search engines), copyright transferring to new owner. Remember: To have 149 articles created at the going rate, you’d be looking at a good few hundred dollars, without a doubt!
• Anti-dupe-content measure in place, .htaccess ensures recipes are accessible only through .com/recipes/recipe.html and not subcategories
• Running a Meta-Description and Meta-Keywords plugin
• Sorted recipes into categories A-Z, including a Hot Sauce category because of popularity, and also a miscellaneous Articles category for non-recipe sauce-related articles
• Search engine facility
• Wordpress scheduling allowing automatic site updates, as well as template and mySQL driven means the site is very easy to update!
• Has a custom PHP script page to allow users to submit their own recipes
• Has a custom PHP contact page to allow users to contact you
• Handy, Wordpress/Auto-updating SEO friendly sitemap split into two parts, ‘recipes’ and ‘articles’

This site is days off from being a year old, it has tons of content and it is SEO friendly. By doing two very simple things you can have this site earning more, and shortly after ranking and earning even more still. Firstly, change the AdSense block from a 468x60 to the far-superior 336x280 will have you earning more instantly, second of all, by doing just a little link building you can turn this site into a real earner for yourself.

The Financials:

Because of my absolute lack of attention paid to the site in the form of link-building, it naturally follows the traffic is very low and thus the earnings aren’t anything fantastic so far, but as I have already said, this can be easily remedied.

The last 3 months have been:

April: $0.99
May: $0.14

All in all, this site, combined with its age and size has fantastic potential. I’ve done the hard work, the easy part is changing the Ads to get a better CTR and getting some much needed links to get the visitors pouring in. Then you’ve got an earner on your hands, just like that!
