Hello guys. Right now, a friend and I have a Darwin Streaming Server (DSS) over at dreamhost that has about 40 or so videos on it. (We also have a few .wmv videos that aren't streaming) We are moving to a dedicated server, but DSS, as far as I know, is not available for the OS on this new server (CentOS release 4.3). I really want to keep these videos on a streaming server, but I don't know if I have any other options. What do you guys suggest? Does anyone have any experience with this? What did you do? I appreciate your help.
if you need to stream wmv, why not use a windows server? it's maybe $15-$20 more a month, and streaming software comes with the o.s.
Almost all of the videos are mov. Moving servers isn't an option because I went in on it with a few friends (actually, it's more like two of us said we would pay for a percentage of the hosting to get a percentage of the diskpsace/bandwidth. I don't want to leave them high and dry with higher server costs than they expected.)
no server software is why i don't use the quicktime format. isn't dss limited to something like 10 concurrent streams? what about that open source version of the realmedia server software? i think that you'll have to be pretty technical to handle it, but the cost is right, if it can handle mov.
from 2002: http://news.com.com/Real+takes+the+open-source+route/2100-1023_3-945406.html also: http://www.realnetworks.com/company/press/releases/2003/helixdna.html https://helixcommunity.org/ i hope that it supports .mov... please let us know how it works out.
