Hello , Last week a thief knocked our door claiming to be electricity money collector . He didn't agree to show us any identity and he didn't even know the number of the flat or the name of its owner , he said a wrong name . When we told him you are mistaken , he said No I'm not , either give me 360 pounds or I'll cut off the electricity , I don't care for who you are . We told him wait we'll call the cops , Mom called the cops and the guy waited like 5 mins for them then ran away . Police came after an hour !! I showed them the picture I captured for that thief and we just signed some papers . BTW I live alone with Mother and brother , I'm 17 and my brother is 18 and half . Today another incident happened , A stranger knocked the door and she was knocking every door in the building , we didn't answer the door this time . We watched her through the window , after she got down the building she was making a sign to somebody ( like saying done without words ) . Mom said , they are probably looking for empty houses or house that consit of women or children so they can rob them . What do you think ? Mom says we should leave the house and go for the other apartment .
Get a "no hawkers, no salespeople" sign. Then if ANYONE knocks, you can tell them to get stuffed. If you need to answer the door when you're at home by yourself, have a phone in your hand and pretend to be speaking to someone "who'll be home in a few minutes". When I lived in the city, I'd often get people knocking on my door asking stupid questions - obviously just to see if anyone was home. Some idiot once knocked on my door to ask me where the nearest swimming pool was.
The one knocking on every door could have been a Jehovah's Witness if she was dressed nicely. Usually they work in pairs but being a former Jehovahs Witness myself, I can tell you they will sometimes split up to cover the whole complex at one shot before security kicks them out.
You have the right to do as you wish, but living a life terrified of your environment, not looking at things logically (the actual crime statistics), knowing how to open you door, or peek hole to see who it is, (or install a TV cam), and not being able to say NO to unwanted solitictors is RIDICULOUS, CHILDISH AND IMMATURE. You sound like you have real emotional problems, perhaps a doctor could help you. I refuse to be held hostage in my own home by my fear.
I don't think you need to leave the house because basically in this world, no place is safe enough. Equip yourself with self defense and make sure you have a proper lock on the door.
Why so many thieves in your block? If they really are thieves, I have to say your mom is right. You should move to a relatively safe place. Or you will suffer from this kind of people sooner or later. Or you can complain to the government, hope they can pay more attention to public security.
Yes, this would be nice. There ain't any point in living with fear in your own home. Home has always referred a sense of relief and comfort, but living in fear - damn it! Try to get rid of this issue ASAP. The best thing would be to contact the authority and ask your neighbors to stay alert and equipped whenever necessary. Besides, you can always rely on security cam for security purpose. At least, you will get some strong grounds to share your concern of fear.
Good advice, Kerosene. You can't be too careful, but you can be well-prepared for such encounters. The key is to think it through before it happens, since those things always catch us off-guard if we haven't thought out a plan. It's a good idea to have several such emergency plans, like how to get out safely in the event of a fire.
