Stranger is registering typos of my domain

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by corinaw, Dec 21, 2005.

    I monitor my fairly unique domain through the whois service called markalert.

    recently I've noticed the following names coming though as new registrations- And I know they're a play on typos of my domain name-

    Say as a example my site is called siteNW com.
    I see;
    wwwsitenw com (no dot after www)
    wwsitenw com
    sitnw com

    My question is why is someone doing this, and should I be worried? Also how/why is someone targetting my specific site same to snag typos? I can't imagine there is a ton of traffic for these urls. Anyone know where to go to find out the the total number of searches for these spelling errors of my domain.

    If any one can share what the point is for someone doing this, I'd appreciate it! I don't know whether to get annoyed, mad, or just ignore it

    Thanks,
    Corina

    Okay, I don't know for sure.....still my guess is there are people keeping thousands of domain to get 404 traffic. Its big when there is big volume of domains and resale could be good price.

    To get typo traffic intended for your site. They obviously feel your site has potential and/or is a very busy site which should equate to a bit of typo traffic.

    What is your site? If you are prepared to disclose it (surely it can't be that shameful ;) )

    This isn't uncommon but I wouldn't worry about it. The only way that people will arrive there is if they try to type in the URL for your site and misspell it. As soon as they get to the crap site, they'll realize it isn't you and retype the correct URL.

    If they find you in a search engine query, there won't be any typos.

    Depends what they set up... they could set up a fake site and take credit card details!
