Strange inconsistencies

    Hi all,

I optimized a site about 8 months ago, and for about the past 3 months it seems to have been stuck at around #40. I've optimized sites like this before and what I'm seeing is unusual.

I also use Googlerankings to check the position sometimes and for at least a few months it has been saying my site is listed at #4, but when I "check google" it's never there.

And finally, I've always found that the home page is the best ranking page yet when I find where my site ranks on the 4th or 5th page of Google, it is not the home page, but a 2nd level page that is consistently ranking for my main target phrase.

Does anyone know what any of this might be about?

    Thanks for any ideas.

Other info... it's not a huge site and in world terms, it's a very specific, non-competitive term. From my experience I should be seeing the site much closer to the first page of Google.

I've seen inconsistencies like this as well, especially when optimizing for very low competition terms. I think it's some sort of filter/sandbox. Optimizing a page for a 2m search results keyword to #1 is alot more consistant for me than for one with just 1k results and almost no competition.
