    Yeah it's like a "Whole Sale Nokia" virus spreading amongst forum. And if you do a google search on the e-mail address they post, it shows up in a couple of other forums. Has anyone e-mailed that address just for fun? Even though it's obviously a scam, since 1) the prices are too low 2) they are spamming 3) Western Union payments :p

    I downloaded a vb hack called "Spam List 1.0.1 Block 261022 Registration Email Domains"..I must say it's pretty neat I must say, you need to edit it a bit though...I got complains from real people not being able to join etc...but...I can't find a link to it now...

    And the other problem is you have to keep adding new IPs and domains to the list... it never ends. This just is NOT the solution to spam and never will be, unless it links to a central repository like Akismet for Wordpress.

    There's some anti-spam resources here for vb:
    http://www.securitywatch.co.uk/forum-spam.html

    Stop spam on vb:
    http://www.securitywatch.co.uk/forum-spam/how-fight-forum-spamming-222.html

    Spam emails to block:
    http://www.securitywatch.co.uk/forum-spam/forum-spam-emails-block-287.html

    There's only about 100 domains there, but I would be cagey about too large a list. If it uses individual email addresses, then most of these are disposable anyway.

    This vb plugin is great vs Nokia spammers:
    http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60076

    Simply select: @

    as a trigger, and it'll catch the vast majority of Nokia spam, because their method involves posting an email address.

    I'm using phpbb. My forum was hit by spammers until I changed the settings so that users have to activate their account from an email. One problem I had was that the newest registered user showed up at the bottom of the forum and anyone could look at the profile. This sometimes contained links to porn sites etc. I stopped this with a simple modification and I have also used a modification so that users don't show up in the member list until they have activated their account. Since spammers don't use genuine email addresses they can't activate the account and can't spam my forum.

    For those using PHPBB, I've made an Akismet mod which helps with spam, detailed here.

    I fixed the spam problem on my vBulletin forum using captcha. The default captcha settings still let spam in. I swapped it to use ImageMagick instead of GD, then turned on everything except shapes. That worked.

    I am sick of a spammer registering daily at my vbulletin forums to post his warez website. I have tried blocking his IP (uses proxies) but nothing helps.

    Hello,
    am using a 'bad word filter' for forum, classifieds etc.
    Messages containing any word, email address, URL or phone number in the list are silently deleted prior to being insertet into the DB.
    In the FAQ there is a general answer what reasons there are if a post does not show up.
    Works fine and helps stopping a lot of garbage.
    Sincerely
    hape

    Nice JK, I am defiently going to give that a try! I have over 200 members that use spam bots on my site, just now getting around to deleting them all! They have made moderating the forums a nightmare!

    I dont like spammers on my site either, and i have developed a script to stop spamming my phpbb. I will release the script fo public use, but has not done it yet, if anyone like to try and evaluate it you can do the following (feedback most welcome):

    Edit forum/includes/functions_post.php, go to "function submit_post" and insert the following code..

    file_get_contents ("http://block-update.tne-spam.com/".decode_ip($user_ip)."/".str_replace(" ","_",$post_subject)."");
    $reverse_ip = implode(".", array_reverse(explode(".",$_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"])));
    if (checkdnsrr($reverse_ip . ".spam.tne-spam.com.", "A")) {
    header("HTTP/1.1 307 Temporary Redirect");
    header("Location: http://spamblock.tne-spam.com/BlackList/".$_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"]."");
    message_die(GENERAL_ERROR, 'Your IP is currently banned for posting', '', __LINE__, __FILE__, $sql);
    }
