Just about everyone across the globe is using Twitter as the latest marketing trend for social networking, but there is a right and wrong way to use it as a marketing tool. Here are a few tips to help you use Twitter effectively. Tip #1 - Don’t Bother Telling the World “What are you doing?â€. Unless your account is used as a personal account that is only for your close friends and/or family, nobody cares what you’re doing. No one cares if you're eating a sandwich, if you’re watching on NCIS on T.V. or that you’re typing a proposal at work, unless there’s something in it for them. Keep in mind that everything you Tweet goes out across the globe and remains there forever. Even if you delete a Tweet, it is still out there. If you don’t want everyone to know something about your personal life, then use common sense and keep it to yourself. Tip #2 – Be Sociable Because that’s What Twitter is. Twitter is a social networking website. Think of it like going to a party and mingling with everyone at the party. At a party you would make the rounds introducing yourself and chit-chat with everyone there. Then you would make connections with the interesting people that you meet that will be a benefit to you, just as you want to be a benefit to others. This is what is called networking. Don’t just tweet your promotions. People that only self promote are just a hairline away from being spammers. Show your shining personality and tweet about interesting tidbits that are relative to your followers. Tip #3 – You Don’t Have to Follow Everyone that Follows You. Set up your Twitter account to follow and be followed by people of the same area of interest. First look at their profile to see what they are about; read a few of their tweets; click some of the links they are referring. If they do not match your area of interest, then don’t follow them. When I first started using Twitter, I did a reciprocal follow for everyone. This didn’t turn out to be the right thing to do. I ended out wasting time by having to block the porn freaks and the spammers, and unfollow people that only Tweeted about what they were eating; or about a subject different from mine. You don’t want to be following people tweeting about weight loss if your followers are into dog training. For example, I do not believe in MLM programs and I don’t want to be continually bombarded about their programs, so I had to unfollow all of the MLMers. Now, I don’t have a gazillion followers, and I only follow who I want, but everyone that I do follow is targeted and we all have something in common. I get really good information from the people I follow and I hope I give out good information. Tip #4 – Ask Your Followers Questions. When you get stuck and need an answer for something. You’ll be suMprise at the helpful answers you will get. People on Twitter are wonderful when it comes to helping others by answering questions. Help others bu answering their questions too. Again, use common sense and don’t over do it. Tip #5 – Develop a Marketing Plan. There are several types of tweets that can be done on a regular basis: * Tips on your topic of interest * Re-tweet things that you find and like, that may be helpful to others * Tweet links to interesting blog posts, websites and Squidoo lens. * Engage with others personally. Tip #6- Don’t Get Too Involved. Sometimes Twitter can be very time consuming and to some, very addictive. Set a schedule for yourself for Twitter time. This will prevent spending to much time Twittering and getting overwhelmed by the amount of information you are receiving. It is impossible to read every single Tweet, so don’t attempt to. Everyone will still be there when you get back. Twitter can be a fabulous marketing tool if used correctly. Just remember that you want to tweet the type of information that you would like to receive. Having the ability to connect with so many people from all over the world, sending traffic to your blogs or websites, and forming new relationships is a tool you want to have and you don’t want to abuse.
