Till seven days back I was using only Win 98 . Now I got a brand new PC with XP , but I am also using the older one . For normal office work, I dont see any difference between XP and Win 98.
I use Win 98 on the laptop and Windows 2K on the desktop. They work fairly well, though it may crash sometimes.
I have never run these operating systems on my desktop. But, my laptop still runs Windows 98 and my other, monochrome laptop still only runs DOS. I never bother with security updates to those machines because they are never online. I migrated from Mac to OS-S Warp for multi-tasking. Then to Windows NT for multi-processors. Then to WinXP because NT would not initailly support athlons. Then to 2003 and back to XP Pro. When support ends, support will end completely. There will be no more security updates and future versions of MSIE will not run on those operating systems. More importantly, other software will more rapidly drop support and will stop running on those operating systems.
I imagine that Win 98 would be a good OS to install on an old laptop because it would run faster. XP would bog it down and bring it to a screeching halt, would it not?
Winxp is good, especially if you compare its stability to win98, but some people on older pcs might not need the bloat and pointless features that winxp has (well at least to the average joe). I suggest if you are going to use winxp on an old laptop, you disable most of the unnecessary services, set the colors to 16 bit and disable all the extra visual features.
My all time favorite = WinMe! No kidding. The all time classic Windows 98 under an improved version of Windows. I wonder why people say this WinMe is not stable etc. I have never had any problem and I still use them!
Ya, I know someone who has run Win ME for years with no problems. They are really getting their money's worth out of their computer and OS.
Well.. I have junked my win 98 machine and have started using win xp on regular basis So I have now XP on my laptop and desktop and one desktop with win 98..
How do you disable unnecessary services? Is this done in the control panel somewhere or under start, run, msconfig?
I use XP pro.. just because its image previewer is better and boobies look good in that Right click on My computer, select manage. when MMC loads choose services under services and applications. and disable unnecessary services. Warning - Dont mess up with services if you dont know what you are doing
I notice some of the services don't have a description. Is there a good website to look these up online to determine if they are resource hogs?
It looks like the time has finally come and MS is has ended it's support for these older operating systems. For someone who has an older computer that can not run Windows XP, what can you recomend to them other than buying a new computer?
Linux, over 300 distros to pick from http://distrowatch.com/ I recomend DSL (small), Mepis (medium), and OpenSuse (full) And you don't have to pay for them, that this they are Free, just download and install. More info can be found @ http://opensuse.us/ or http://www.usalug.org/
Is there a distro of linux that you can download and fit onto 1 CD or do most of them require you to burn them on a DVD now? I have a CD burner, but I don't want to hassle with a multiple disk install as my CD burner is old and often doesn't work. When you say DSL is small, do you mean that the install can fit on 1 CD?
ouch me ops system was horrilble just another way for microsoft make money i am glad the xp came out when it did
Maybe I should have said tiny, around 50MB or a mini CD. Mepis fits on 1 CD and can be run as a Live CD so that you can try it out before you install it. http://www.mepis.org/
