According to BBC News and the Liverpool web site Steven Gerrard has decided to call it a day with Liverpool and does not wish to sign a new contract. About 30 minutes ago Liverpool issued a press release stating that Gerrard had turned down an offer of £100,000 a week and had told Liverpool he wished to leave the club. What I'd like to know is what exactly turned Gerrard from wanting to stay at Liverpool to rejecting a new club record for wages offered? Did he have a fall out with the manager? Has someone contacted him from Real offering him £8 mil a year? Has his agent been responsible for this change of heart? What is it that is going on behind the scenes that we dont know about? Hopefully we'll find out and more importantly we get the price we deserve for selling Stevie. Here's the BBC article http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4653041.stm and here's the Liverpool website article http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N149253050705-1435.htm
This is indeed a sad news to all Reds fans.. I can only wish Stevie all the best and thanks for his services....
Same here obenix. I'm quite excited by the new players Benitez has brought in though and £35 million should be able to buy some decent new players.
Nope Liverpool turned down a £32mil bid from them. Word has it he's on his way to Real Madrid for £35mil with a £8 mil a year contract.
lol Even if it was a sunny day every day and everything is half the price you pay for it in England and half of your mates all played for the club?
It's still speculation for now. I've heard that Figo could be on his way out so this could be a feasible deal as Liverpool will be looking to replace Gerrard.
And now Steven Gerrard has to decided to stay again. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4654837.stm
That's great news for Liverpool and for everyone else who doesn't want to see Chelsea buy the title again.
That's a bit harsh on Chelsea's excellent management. I don't think they've bought the title at all. Just look at national teams. They all have great players (Holland & England prime examples) but it takes team spirit (Greece, Korea) to get far. If you had unlimited budget to now buy yourself a Premiership squad, odds are good you don't win it first season.
He did exactly the same last Summer when he was on the verge of joining Chelsea and he decided to stay. The fans are worried this is going to be a yearly occurence. I'm delighted he's staying but I don't like the dependance on 1 player at the club. It's not good for team spirit. Hopefully Alonso will shine even more this year and will be as big as Gerrard. He's certainly got the potential. To be honest I'm liking the look of the Liverpool squad this year. Cisse Morientes and Baros up front Gerrard Alonso Zenden Risse Garcia Hamann Gonzalez in midfield Barragan Carragher Hyypia and Finnan in defence Reina and Carson as keepers The defence could probably be strengthened but it's a lot stronger team than Houllier managed to get.
To a certain extent that's true but they did buy the best manager as well to make sure they had good team spirit. People are saying that Benitez is a better manager though. We'll see what happens this year
Yeah it's a quality squad, gonna be an interesting season. Arsenal are probably pissed, just like Man U they didn't get much last year. Chelsea will be looking to sustain their efforts and now add Liverpool in the mix as a real contender for trophies. I noticed Newcastle pulled the plug on a couple of quality players, they don't seem to be 'going for it' this year.
Yeah just rub it in, I'm finding it difficult to be optimistic this year, I'm fear a season battling against relegation looming.
We still have Shearer but he's far from his best and currently injured, on the birght side we have Chopra that well known championship player as backup
