Hello all, I am trying to get an idea off the ground. It would be an online business where I would be prompting another businesses products. So by people coming to my site the other party could make a potential sale. I would thus make money off the actual sales and maybe even number of clicks on their links. Do I need to patent this type of site? It’s not an invention or anything new. What are the steps I would need to take in order to get something like this started? I appreciate all your help, thx.
The business model you propose is fairly straightforward. You might want to search the forum on "affiliate marketing" to see what others are doing.
You seem to speak of 2 kinds of ways of making money. One is affiliate marketing, where you promote other people's products and make commissions when people buy through you. You can make money from people clicking on links through Google Adsense. You make money when people click on those ads. There are also similar pay per click ad programs you can look into.
For the promotion of other peoples products, you are going to need them to be part of (or run their own) an affiliate programme, otherwise they (and you) will not be able to track where the visits and sales are coming from. Steps to take....start reading this forum and then start. Do not think about things like patents, businesscards, logos, flyers, nameawareness, branding, etc etc as that is not your main goal. Keep it simple and start ..and if you want to know getting a patent on this idea is indeed not possible as it is the way people make money online since the early days of internet.
You would need to do affiliate marketing. You can use your affiliate page as a landing, that is where you will refer people to buy or to presell your product and then refer them to your principals.
No you don't need a patent for this kind of website, this technology already exists and a site can actually be setup do this very easily... do a Google search for affiliate schemes and you will see that there are lots of schemes available offering you the chance to make some money by sending sales to other companies.
