Its something that is very broad, not the kind of thing that can be taught here. Best thing that I could recommend is to check out other peoples methods (Shameless plug: The best one that I have ever used is in my sig, it has defined my own method that I have devised, and is absolutely brilliant!), and learn from them. SEO is not something that can be just learned through a forum, it takes time, and takes experimenting with other ideas, and so on and so forth.
It's very easy to get bamboozled with all the SEO info around. A common management problem - loads to do but no idea where to start. For me the bet way to learn something is to jump straight in, "suck it and see". You need a goal to aim for, so why not sign up to a helpful affiliate program and aim for your first sale?

Search for "google starter guide seo pdf" and start with reading that book. It contains the basics of seo and very useful for newbies. Also read the threads through search engine optimization in this forum and others. That way you can learn lot of things.
