Symptoms - depends on the disease but any discharge, discoloration or pain when urinating is a worrying sign. Some diseases, eg. Clamydia, can lie dormant in the body without any visible symptoms.

Don't flatter him. Best thing to do is go to the dr. It might be embarrassing for your friend but it's an everyday thing for the dr. They're obliged to be confidential so there's no reason to delay. Bear in mind that for girls there can be long term fertility consequences - and while these may not seem important right now they will be one day.
Im sure if your friend calls his family docter, and asks him what symptons to look for, im sure that would help very much.
