Staying on the first page...

So I've been on the first page of Google for certain keywords but I've been penalized a couple of times for excessive backlink building (massive stumbles).

My question is, I'm now back on the 1st page as #7. I was usually #1 or #2. What's the best way to climb up and stay on the 1st page without getting penalized for it?

thanks in advance for any/all help...

Two phrases that you should burn into your memory...

    1. Quality Content
    2. Quality Relevant Backlinks

#1 refers to having content of high quality, meaning it's unique and not found anywhere else on the web. The content should not be stuffed with keywords, it should also interlink to other web pages on your website.

#2 refers to having quality sites that are relevant (meaning same topic\subject\etc) linking to yours. These sites should also appear in the same search results if possible for the same subject of keywords and phrases. Using proper anchor is also a must, make sure to use exactly the same text for anchor text as the keyword phrase your trying rank for.

Lets not forget on-page optimization should be optimal as well.

I am lost..penalized by Google for exchanging Stumbles?
    Is that what you mean?

Don't get tooo many back links at once, let them come in as if it were natural, also going back to what ssandecki said, make the links valuable and not just excessive, make sure they are quality links. Also update your site at least 3 times a week, depending on how competitive the keyowrd is.

Now that you are on the first page for your keywords you need to ensure you keep doing everything you were doing to achieve that ranking. This may not be needed as excessively, however if it helped to achieve your first page ranking why not keep doing this.

    Hi,

The best kind of backlinks you should try and get are…

    - Targeted hand submission, niche website one-way backlink, i.e. if you have a “Travel” related website.
    - The best thing you can do is get one-way backlinks that are on other “Travel” related websites with useful Google Page Rank.

One-Way Backlinks - Measure of Credibility
The major search engines assume a website with a high number of backlinks is highly credible, more trustworthy, professional and more expert in their niche than other sites.

Every time someone links to your website the search engines counts it as a “vote” for your site and typically moving it up the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).

    Hope this helps
P.S. I’ll be launching a new targeted hand submission, one-way backlink service very soon, if you would like more details just PM me.

    All the best - Natfirst
