stay on asmallorange or move to hostgator?

    Hi,

I have been using a shared hosting for a while on ASO and I am happy(ish) with it. But the problem with any Shared hosting is that the site runs slowly sometimes. And sometimes other scripts can bring it down.

As my site is slowly growing I now want to move to a VPS, the package they offer is well within my plan for this year at least.
But a VPS is still on a shared machine as far as I understand and other sites could cause the exact same problem as with shared hosting.

But for $50.00 a month it is still a good deal.

So what do you recommend? VPS on ASO or another package on Hostgator?

I've had a shared hosting account at Hostgator for a few months without any problems. Can't comment on how it compares to ASO.

ASO is better if you can get to VPS. If you need shared, move to HG.

I'd certainly vouch for HostGator. Check real HostGator Reviews and Coupons.

But, as you said that the sites are growing, I'd suggest you to consider a VPS. Maybe your concept of VPS is a bit mistaken...even though they share the same server, every VPS has its resources totally independent and dedicated.

You could go with cheapvps.co.uk (nice prices and performance so far). Though it's unmanaged, the LxAdmin control panel is very good and will save you from server management woes. (really! it's kinda hands free) :)

Compared to ASO, Hostgator is better. There are fewer restrictions, but it is more expensive.

I suggest you move to Hostgator. They have great servers.

The only negative is that Hostgator's support takes much longer to respond, compared to ASO.

Yo aure a bit wrong when you say that a VPS will be slow due to other website.

A VPS as its dedicated ressource. The only site that could slow your site are your own. Unless you rent space on your vps.

Well right now the whole of asmallorange seems to be down.
I have many domains on various server and they all seem to be down.

In fact the 'satus' page seems to be down http://status.asmallorange.com/ as well...

Now if only I could get a sign as to who to choose :)

    VPS==virtual private server

So, what about the other "virtual* servers on the same *physical* server?

My understandind, (correct me if I am wrong), is that a VPS is assigned a certain amount of memory/resources/disk quota and they cannot use more than that certain amount.

But they can still take the CPU down.
