Got this from a friend: (We're Canadian) This year in that great country to the south of us, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on the same day. As Air America Radio pointed out, "It is an ironic juxtaposition of events: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication while the other involves a groundhog."
One more: This is the transcript of the ACTUAL radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities, off thecoast of Newfoundland, in October 1995. Radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10-10-95. Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision. Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision. Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course. Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course. Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, I SAY AGAIN, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP. Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call!
Too funny roman1 - loved the lighthouse banter. BTW - the State of the Union was 31-Jan; Groundhog Day was 02-Feb. However, the points remain valid.
Guess this is just a timless joke appropriate top whenever past, present or future the State of the Union and Groundhog day happen to fall on the same day. Sorry shameless plug for my site.
I never get tired of your site! It's one of those you can get lost in - I wouldn't doubt it if Ken Jennings didn't do some studying there preparing for Jeopardy
Oh cool, do I get "concept credit?" He's probably the only contestant to get an endorsement deal too ... that'd be an interesting tidbit if it could be verified - geeks unite!
