    Here's what's happened for me:

Best success: had a brand new domain (reg'd 9-17-07) go from PR0 to PR4. Its a jokes page, with about 22 jokes on it - the whole site is one page. It did extremely well however on social networks, including making the StumbleUpon buzz feed. IMHO, Google has given social media sites tremendous authority.

My business' home page went from 1 to 2. Its linked on a lot of the pages we make in the footer, including the site above - I suppose these don't count as much.

Domains I purchased with real PR kept at least some of it - about half in most cases. No domains which were reasonably old (3+yrs) lost all their PR - down to PR1 in the worst cases.

Sites with generalized automated RSS content did not do well at all. This would be sites aggregating feeds like YouTube videos tagged "funny", or other extremely broad feeds. I've been writing software to take a semi-automatic approach as opposed to the fully-automatic, and I hope to have better success with this tactic.

Sites with more focused RSS content did OK, but generally stayed the same.

My cheat code sites performed poorly, which is no surprise. Both stayed at 0.

My only directory lost all its PR (PR3 to PR0).

I have about half my sites on their own dedicated IPs - this made no difference that I can see.

Edit: I should also mention, that paid links did nothing for me - neither positive nor negative.
