Starting to make small amounts of cash (total $20), would like your suggestions.

    Hi.

I've finally made a site that has begun bringing in a little cash. On average I would say about one click per day, and over the past month I have made about $14. I know, it's very little but it's a start. I would like to discuss it with you and hear your thoughts / suggestions.

First of all, an Adsense screencap of my earnings during June:

(I think that image is within google TOS, if not please tell me!)

The previous month, the site was launched and averaged about 40 hits/day, which brought in very little earnings relative to this month. I went around to some forums that may be interested in my site and mentioned it. Also my friend took off an advertised it on some sites like Digg in exchange for 30% of any profits we make.

Now the traffic is weird, in June there was a sharp rise from ~30 hits a day up to 500 over a period of about two days. Then it dropped back to ~30 for a week, before jumping to 500 again (It's reducing back down as we speak). Here is a screencap of my page hits:

Now during the second jump in traffic, I decided to change my adsense layout. I now have two adsense banners (I allways use 468x60) on the main page. One directly above the little blurb about the site, which I have set to blend in with the theme. Then, further down the page I have another one which uses the same colour theme but stands out from its surroundings. Every other page also has the stand-out style.

How do you think I can optimize my profits on these little bursts of traffic to an otherwise very quiet site? I recently put in a forum to try and get some visitor loyalty, but that was only last night.

Any ideas for Adsense? I want to ask about how I can keep the traffic steady but I guess this is the wrong forum.

If you want to see the website, please ask here or PM me. I will PM back the site. I'd prefer not to publicize it on digitalpoint.

Also if you have any questions (not that I know much) about my experience so far, I'd be happy to answer...

The first thing that looks odd is that you have a perfect 8-day cycle starting to form on your peaks. 3 peaks is a little early to tell, but strikes me as being artificial and something to be careful about incase the traffic is determined to be suspect. Is your friend resting for 7 days in between his promotion activities?

It also looks like your website is either only one page, or your visitors only look at one page and then bounce off? That tells me that people may be getting there by "mistake" meaning that they don't find what they want (IF you have multiple pages, I mean...if you have only one page, then that's all they can bring up so it may not be that they aren't finding what they want)

    Hi Adpubster :D

My friend hasn't been doing anything dodgy but I haven't kept records of how often he drops a line in forums etc. I think it generally has the same visibility over the weeks but for some reason really picks up every few days? I am not really sure yet...

As a matter of fact, the main attraction is only one page. There are only about 5 pages in total, each with a different internet tool, like a YouTube downloader and scripts like that. The tool that the site is based around is the most popular, and only takes up one page. How could you tell that from the stats above?

The forum is an attempt to 'catch' those people who only visit that one page.

The 8-day cycle has me puzzled since if he were only active one day, you'd think it would be the same day each week and we would be looking at a 7-day cycle. It's something you should probably keep an eye on and see if the cycle continues like that. That COULD be enough of a pattern in the distribution of traffic to raise some eyebrows.

Your graph from analytics was set to "Visits" and when I compared visits to ad impressions it was almost 1:1 which tells me that most visitors view only one page, you can verify this by selecting "Pageviews" in analytics. You MIGHT have more success by creating more pages which will attract a wider and wider audience and also give them something else to look at if they don't find it on the main page. This will increase your impressions AND the odds that an ad will eventually be clicked.

If people are coming to your site and viewing only one page (usually) that says that they are leaving right away. They can do this two ways, one is by hitting the back arrow, the other is by clicking an ad. Since you ad clicks don't seem to be too high, they have to be just back arrowing off your site. This means they may not have found the content useful, and thus the ads also probably are not targeted to what they want.

Check around here and you'll see that Digg users aren't too prone to click ads so promoting there may not give you much in the way of direct click results. You really need to get targeted traffic to the site in order for it to be valuable traffic.

sharing full google adsense information is against TOS you have to get permissions from google before doing that!

I agree the 8 day cycle is rather odd... I will keep an eye on that now and see what happens over the next few weeks. I am aware that most Digg users are not ad clickers (being one myself) but it's a quick way to get your site indexed, a few visits and a backlink :D

inova: In the reports tab, click 'Advanced Reports' :)

totalmasala: I am fairly certain it is acceptable if you don't disclose CPM? Hm...

Did you not track where the traffic was coming from?
