Publish an absolutely killer linkbait article on Ezinearticles with a link to your website (anchor text keyword phrase) included in the article. Not only will you get some nice juice from EZA itself, but your article is likely to get republished by lots of other webmasters looking for great content, giving you a whole bunch of extra free backlinks without any extra work.
First, (I'm assuming you've already done this) you need to make sure you're targeting easy-to-rank-for keywords with decent traffic. Then you need to make sure your website is super-focused on that keyword, and loads REALLY fast (use css instead of tables) If you've done these things first, you can get backlinks from anywhere (go to wetpaint.com or hubpages.com if you need to) and put content links back to your site. Then ping your site and the sites you linked to yourself from. The work you did in the first 2 steps will be what pays off, the links and pings will just show google what you need to be ranked for.
Do-Follow blog commenting is a great way to start building search engine rankings. Target long tail keywords that are being searched quite often and then target your comments to those keywords.
