We have software development company and looking forward to start a new department for Internet Marketing and SEO. I want your views to how to go about that ? How many people would I know to start that.
What should they be good/best in ?

    I think :
I would need data entry guy to submit sites in search engines, directories and press releases.
I would also need content writers to write good press release
I would also need people with research interest who can read and comprehend SEO articles and latest updates in the industry..

Which websites should be good starting point ?

    Please advice

What do you mean which websites? Those are pretty good goals for a start up, you need a head SEO guy that will coordinate all the activities completed by the rest too.

I am looking for an advise to start the SEO department in my existing software development company. Now, I want to know, how should I start.
I was thinking of appointing 3 guys
1 for data entry (directories, search engines etc)
    1 for content writing
1 for keyword research , analysis, SEO research etc.

Now, What else do I need to keep in mind to compete with existing SEO firms.

You also have to think about someone to actual implement the SEO changes within the site. Also, a couple programmers that know PHP and ASP, as every site you come across is going to be different and they won't all be straight HTML pages. Where to find these types of people? Put an ad in the paper. Or train them. I've trained my staff from scratch. They had no clue what SEO was, but they picked it up quickly.

Not really into suggesting how many people would be hired but at least one of them has strengths on the following areas:

    1. Organic SEO and link development
    2. PPC Professional (GAP would be preferred)
    3. Copywriting (you can actually outsource this if your budget is tight)
    4. Web analytics

If you have resources that have these skills, the overhead costs will be lower.
