Well that depends on the hosting companies, and BTW these directories dont get any real traffic, all from submitters who come to spam and leave and this can never put a real load on the servers.

I think that he must be having 5-6 reseller accounts. Now reseller accts can be as low at $24 on hostgator Or may be he has a nice VPS deal :)

I agree with you 100% Amit.

The irony is that if you look around these QBC directories, which category do you think gets the most listings first? That would be anything related to web directories. I know much of the time it is the directory owner's own sites, but many times I have seen big name directories paying for premium placement on these sites.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if a directory is obviously crap - STOP SUBMITTING YOUR SITES TO IT!!!

We can sometimes be our own worst enemies.

It's the mistake of submitters who can't identify or don't check those sites properly.
    Nothing can be done mate.

    They don't.

There is really nothing you can do to stop these guys, I used to hang out at Sitepoint and comment about the scam they are running but it is way too time consuming. Anyone can start a directory with a .99 domain name, free hosting and free template/category dump....when you can start a business for .99 what do you have to lose?

It really reflects poorly on the whole directory industry and that is why I sold off most of my general directories and will only build niche portals now.

Hey.. he calls them quality directories :) though I see atleast 50 links in footer and submit page is 'extra slow'. But just to be sure.. he does seem to accept the sites quickly :))

well honestly speaking amit you are wrong and other people ofcourse (that also includes me). No doubt people spam DP a lot and we both used to (we had no sense at that time) similarly we can't stop new comers or immature people here. We need to have good mods for specially to control over indians or spammers and that might be u or honey (mods i mean) and now It's not the matter of spamming here. If you remember our last year's talk then i told you that don get involve into this shit but you made heaps of money here and me too. Honestly it was doing worth for us as our main aim was to earn money but if you think on client's perspective then it's wrong and i would suggest every new or old client before ordering any SEO related work at DP pls use your brain instead of blaming any other chap at DP. One more thing guys i see lot of positive change in amit's attitude ;)

Now if we take other people's opinion lets say jimkarter very reputated member of DP who has been making heaps of money (which we all appreciate as he give very useful info in his blog ;) haha) then he himself believe in dir listings till today and i can bet on that. And if you pick his any of site which has very good google or yahoo rankings then u will see his sites have 90% backlinks from dirs only lol

Finally Amit u and i both know that it's fair game, so don bother. :)

Lets get frank and please please stop supporting someone whom i was referring to in post #1.

The first thing is around a year back it was a good time for directory business but because of the new crap directories upcoming daily in bulk the whole business got a real bad name, you are just letting me to support someone but not looking into the whole niche in total which finally got a bad name.

There is no point in submitting to directories but the main point is that a website in order to get optimized should have a mix in backlinks for attaining the best ranks but what the new webmasters get in a idea that just submitting to these new directories would help them out and this is the main mistake they do and finally blame saying that submitting their websites to a directory didnt help them out.

May be you just were interested in giving a reply because i posted a link to someone you knew and you seem to have ignored the whole set of replies in this thread. You could have made a suggestive post rather than a supportive post.

Do you think the moderators would allow for an impartial but informative explanation of how to evaluate directories or something similar to be made a sticky in the solicitations area? It could inform those who don't understand that they are throwing their time and money away when submitting to the really bad directories and would maybe have the side benefit of stopping some of the solicitations for these sites in the first place.

@YMC I am very much sure that a decent guide on what makes a good directory would be stuck, but probably in this forum rather than the S & A forums. Perhaps PM a mod to confirm this.

Amit, this has been ongoing for almost 2yrs now.

It is one of the factors which had me cancel my submission services.
I feel that when your site is in to many QBC sh*t directories, it eventually takes its toll.

    Thanks for making the thread.

    @YMC:

    Im with you and agree.

Any guide would have to go in the solicitation forum to be effective. Putting it here would simply be preaching to the choir.

The thread about "read this before posting" degraded into a disaster and probably should be unstickied and left to die in favor of a LOCKED informative post that covers what the post tried to do as well as some sort of evaluation criteria for newbies.
