Starting an online game, what do I do?

    Hi there,

I recently just got an idea in my head that would make for an interesting online game but I have a problem. I don't know how to program a game that would run in your browser like many MMORPG games do and I have little artistic talent; certainly not artistic talent that would be sufficient for this type of project.

I figure I need three people to get this type of thing off the ground. I would need a programmer that could do an online MMORPG type of game, (though this is more of a simulation game than an MMORPG) some one who can work well with computer graphics and some one with a knack for marketing a website...thoug the third position I could fill on my own.

Where do I look to find the people for this type of thing? Would some one accept partnership and a share of profits for payment or this pretty much unheard of?

    Cheers

Unless you have contacts (i.e - friends who can program) I think it will be kind of hard to find someone to do a JV with you. It might be easier to round up some investment from (friends?) and then pay for a programmer to do the work.

As for finding a programmer... think of where game programmers would hang out, like an on-line forum dedicated to game building, and start asking around.

It's worth baring in mind: Having an idea is 10%, putting it into practice is the remaining 90% - If you really believe in the project, don't be like most and give up, make it work! :)

I wish you all the best.

Well im not a pro but ive made games myself and have recently completed one for a project... its simple.. you collect points and you avoid the baddies... there is a timer also etc...

I also do websites and marketing...

I would suggest you have a wage to pay people... as i highly doubt somebody will want to take this on with all their hard work with nothing in return.

    Canuck,
Not to sound negative, but There are an over abundance of online
Games as it is and most are free. Gaming will be a tuff field to
put together from scratch, costly but not impossible. Why not
see if you can buy into a new gaming site just starting up.
    Good Luck,
    Karl

I would also add, that Im somewhat unsure as to how good the Browser based MMORPG market is. fact is most of the main F2P or P2P games use their own client, and that adds a whole new level of complexity.

Also there are 2 HUGE releases coming down the pike, AoC (released in a few weeks) and WAR ....I anticipate they will take in a HUGE majority of online players.

    Nonetheless, good luck

I've built an online soccer manager game from scratch and it's been online for a while now, take a look at my signature if interested. A lot of hard work and little pay, not really to recommend in an financial point of view.

If your interest is to make money then my advise to you is to find an existing game and try to buy it and then start from there. On the other hand you don't get the joy of creating.

Its great to see that another member is inspired to create an online game :)

I have personally created an online game (Absolute III) three years ago and truly.. it was never easy.. especially if you tell people that you are developing a free game and they won't be expecting to see any returns at least for a couple of years..

I have found some really good supporters along the way in game forums. Some players have great ideas and skills set but have never implement them just because they have not find the right person at the right time. Try searching for interested people in popular game forums.

    Good luck!

If you are planning to do MMORPG, you need more people than 3.
MMORPG's first "M" stands for MASSIVELY. It sounds impossible to do anything massively with only 3 ppl.

Didn't meant to ruin your dreams, but, thats the way it is.

But I think it is possible and likely to find people who could make a game for free.
Because it helps them to break in to game industry. Experiece is the thing that matters.

So, good luck with your game.
