affiliate marketing is about knowing what products people are looking for, and when/where to find those people. forums are a common way to get people to click on affiliate links, but most forums have strict rules on that. The forum would become less popular if it didn't have such tight rules, and this definitely includes this one. For example if a moderator sees someone post an affiliate link, they might either delete that post, give a warning, or take the referral code out of your affiliate link. Its a good prinical actually. So, you could put your blog or website inside your forum signature, and your blog/website can contain affiliate links. make sure there's lots of information on the site to offer - if all you've really got is links you've got nothing to offer and people won't come back to your site.

it really depends weather your looking to be a affiliate (publisher) or merchant (advertiser)? the best advise with out knowing this is to research the industry you work in / want to work in and look at what merchants are in there sector and start to compare the programmes looking at the positive and negatives for each. that why you'll either know which programme are best to promote or what your competition are doing and how to improve upon it for your affiliates.
I recommend you check out some of the blogs out there that have a great amount of information regarding all aspects of affiliate marketing. If you would like a few recommendations let me know. It will be easy to get overwhelmed at first but if you pick one form of advertising one offer and just push push you will learn more and gain skill in that form of advertising. Hope this helps.
